Long-term storage & winterizing tips

Best Storage Practices

A little preparation helps prevent cracked water lines, dead batteries, mildew and unwelcome surprises when it is time for your next trip. Use this checklist for your camper or motorhome, whether you store covered or uncovered.

Start with your owner’s manual. Winterizing and battery procedures vary by RV, appliances and battery type. These are general storage tips; follow your equipment instructions or have a qualified RV technician prepare your unit.

Protect water lines before a freeze

Water left in plumbing can freeze, expand and crack pipes, fittings or pumps. Prepare before freezing weather is forecast—even in covered storage. Draining the fresh-water tank alone does not winterize the plumbing.

Follow your RV’s procedure for tanks, water heater, faucets, toilet, outdoor shower and any filters, washer or ice maker. Use only antifreeze labeled for RV potable-water plumbing when specified; never automotive antifreeze. Compressed-air methods require the manufacturer’s pressure limits and instructions.

Keep batteries from going dead

Small electrical loads can drain a parked RV over time. Follow the RV and battery manuals to isolate batteries or use a compatible maintenance charger. Some loads remain connected even with the battery disconnect switch off.

Check house and chassis batteries as applicable. Storage charge levels and charging limits differ for lead-acid and lithium batteries. Do not charge lithium batteries outside their approved temperature range. Ask a technician about solar and charger shutoff order, and confirm permitted electrical use with us before plugging in.

Close propane valves

For an unoccupied RV in storage, turn off propane appliances and close the propane tank or cylinder supply valves according to your manual. Secure cylinders in their approved mounts. Have damaged hoses, fittings or suspected leaks checked by a qualified technician before using the system again.

Control moisture & mildew

Store the interior clean and dry. Place RV moisture-absorber bins on stable, level surfaces following the product label. Check and replace them when used up; they help reduce excess moisture but cannot fix leaks or guarantee a mildew-free camper.

Defrost, clean and dry the refrigerator, then secure its doors in the manufacturer’s storage position. Allow interior cabinet and cushion air circulation. Keep rain out and inspect roof, window and door seals.

Remove food & discourage pests

Empty food, trash and perishables; clean crumbs and spills. Check for signs of insects or rodents during visits. Use manufacturer-approved pest protection, and never obstruct required ventilation or an appliance exhaust. Remove any storage covers before operating equipment.

Check tires & exterior seals

Inspect tires, including the spare, for damage and cracking. Maintain the pressure specified for your vehicle’s load and tire setup; check again before travel. Inspect roof seams, windows and doors for leaks so a small issue does not become hidden water damage while parked.

Check in while it is stored

Set a reminder to visit regularly and after severe weather. Look for leaks, condensation, pests and tire damage; check battery condition and moisture bins. Follow your engine and generator manuals for fuel preparation and storage maintenance.

Before your next trip

De-winterize, flush and sanitize the water system as directed, then check for leaks. Restore batteries and required safety systems—including trailer breakaway power before towing. Test detectors, lights and brakes, inspect tires, and have the propane system checked if needed.
